The Ascendant's long history in astrology

The Rising sign is arguably the oldest core building block of personal astrology. Babylonian astrologers were already tracking the eastern horizon at the moment of birth by the 5th century BCE, and when Hellenistic astrologers in Egypt and Greece systematized what we now call "horoscopic" astrology around the 2nd century BCE, the Ascendant became the anchor point for the entire house system — literally the word horoscope comes from the Greek hōroskopos, "hour-watcher" or "marker of the hour," referring specifically to this rising point.
