What your birth chart shows
Your birth chart (or natal chart) is a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment you were born — where the Sun, Moon and every planet sat against the twelve signs of the zodiac. It's the foundation of astrology: your Sun sign is only one of a dozen placements, and the full picture is what makes you you. To build it accurately you need three things: your date, time and place of birth.
The Big Three
Three placements do most of the heavy lifting. Your Sun is your core identity and drive. Your Moon is your emotional, inner world. Your Rising sign (Ascendant) — the sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon at your birth — shapes how you come across and sets the whole layout of your houses. Because the Rising sign changes every couple of hours, an accurate birth time matters.

The lines drawn across your chart wheel are aspects — the angles planets make to one another. A conjunction (0°) fuses two energies; a trine (120°) and sextile (60°) let them flow easily; a square (90°) and opposition (180°) create tension that pushes you to grow. Together they turn a list of placements into a living portrait of how you work on the inside.

Common misconceptions about birth charts
A few myths tend to trip people up when they first look at their chart. The biggest is treating the Sun sign as the whole story — it's one of ten placements, and a chart full of Scorpio energy in the Moon, Rising and Venus can outweigh a Sun in a completely different sign. Another is assuming a "difficult" aspect like a square or opposition is a bad omen; in practice these tense angles are usually where the most growth and drive live, since ease rarely forces change the way friction does. People also assume that anyone born on the same day shares an identical chart — true only for the Sun sign. Everything else, especially the Moon and the entire house system, depends on the exact time and place of birth, which is why two siblings born hours apart can read very differently. There's also a common assumption that a birth chart is fixed and finished once it's calculated. It is fixed — the sky doesn't change after you're born — but astrologers still track how today's planetary positions (transits) interact with your natal placements, which is a separate layer built on top of this chart rather than a contradiction of it.
