Why your sign doesn't match the stars overhead

If you've ever looked up and noticed the constellation Scorpius isn't actually behind the Sun during "Scorpio season," you're not imagining things. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which divides the sky into twelve equal 30-degree slices anchored to the seasons — the Aries slice always starts at the spring equinox, regardless of which constellation happens to sit there. Because of a slow wobble in Earth's axis called precession, the constellations have drifted out of alignment with those slices over roughly 2,000 years, so the star pattern of Scorpius now falls mostly during what tropical astrology calls Sagittarius season. Sidereal astrology, used in Vedic traditions, corrects for this drift and can assign a different sign than the tropical system does. Neither is "wrong" — they're two different frameworks measuring different things, one tied to the seasons and one to the visible constellations. Nearly all Western Sun-sign astrology, including this calculator, uses tropical dates, so if you've seen a "true sign" claim elsewhere that shifted your sign back a slot, that's the sidereal system talking, not an error.
