How to read this month
A lunar month is about 29.5 days, so it never lines up with a calendar month. That is why January 2024 can hold two new moons or none at all, and why the same phase name covers several days in a row: the eight names — new, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full, waning gibbous, last quarter, waning crescent — are 45-degree slices of the Sun–Moon angle, not instants. In traditional practice that is a window for finishing and resting rather than launching; it describes timing, not outcomes, and nothing on this page predicts events.
Where the numbers come from
Positions are computed with astronomy-engine, the same engine behind our birth chart calculator, checked against Swiss Ephemeris to within a fraction of an arc minute. The new and full moon moments were verified against AstroPixels (Fred Espenak, NASA/GSFC) and agree to better than two minutes.
