What BaZi is
BaZi — literally "eight characters" — is the Chinese astrology of the Four Pillars of Destiny. Your birth year, month, day and hour each become a pillar of two characters: a Heavenly Stem (one of five elements in its yang or yin form) sitting above an Earthly Branch (one of the twelve zodiac animals). Eight characters in total — a compact map of your energy, character and life.
Your Day Master
The single most important character is the stem of your Day Pillar, called the Day Master. It represents you — your core element and how you meet the world. A Yang Wood Day Master is nothing like a Yin Water one. Everything else in the chart is read in relation to it.
How it's calculated
BaZi runs on the solar calendar, not the ordinary Western one. The year changes at Lichun (around 4 February) and each month at a solar term, so this calculator uses the Sun's true position rather than the calendar month. The hour pillar uses your local solar time, which is why your birth place matters.
