Where letter-to-number numerology comes from

Assigning numbers to letters is credited to Pythagoras, the 6th-century BCE Greek philosopher and mathematician, who taught that numbers were the fundamental building blocks of reality and that names — spoken sound made permanent in written form — carried vibrational meaning. The Pythagorean system used by this calculator maps letters to digits 1 through 9 in repeating columns, which is why it differs from the older Chaldean numerology system (originating in ancient Babylon), which assigns numbers based on sound values and treats the number 9 as sacred and unused in personal calculations. Modern name numerology, as it's practiced today, was popularized in the early 20th century by writers who systematized these old letter-number correspondences into the Expression, Soul Urge and Personality framework used here. It's worth knowing that both systems are still in active use, and a name that reduces to one number in Pythagorean numerology can land on a different number in Chaldean — neither is more "correct," they're simply different lenses built on different founding assumptions.

The most common mistake is reading Expression, Soul Urge and Personality as three separate, disconnected facts rather than one layered self-portrait. Think of it this way: your Personality number is the surface — how new acquaintances read you before they know you well. Your Expression number is the fuller picture — your natural talents and life direction once someone actually gets to know you. Your Soul Urge is the private layer underneath both — what you want when no one's watching or judging. Tension between these three is completely normal and often the most revealing part of a reading: someone with a reserved Personality number but a bold Expression number may seem quiet at first, then surprise people once they open up. It's also worth noting these numbers are calculated from your name at birth, not a married name or stage name — a name adopted later in life is generally read as adding its own separate numerological layer on top, rather than replacing your original blueprint.
