What the numerology calculator works out
This free numerology calculator reads the two things numerology is built on — your full birth name and your date of birth — and returns the five numbers at the heart of your chart. Your core numbers each describe a different layer of who you are.
Your five core numbers
- Life Path — from your birth date. The big one: your life's direction, lessons and natural path.
- Expression (Destiny) — from all the letters of your name. Your talents and what you're here to build.
- Soul Urge (Heart's Desire) — from the vowels. What you secretly want and what truly moves you.
- Personality — from the consonants. The version of you other people meet first.
- Birthday — from the day you were born. A specific gift you carry through life.
How the numbers are calculated
Every letter is given a value from 1 to 9, and your birth date is added digit by digit. The totals are reduced down to a single digit — unless they land on 11, 22 or 33, the master numbers, which are left as they are because they carry extra intensity.

Where numerology's number system comes from
The version of numerology used here traces back to Pythagoras and his school in ancient Greece, who taught that numbers weren't just quantities but qualities — that 1 carried the nature of unity and leadership, 2 the nature of balance, and so on through 9. That letter-to-number mapping (A=1, B=2, C=3… cycling back to 1 after 9) is what turns your name into the Expression, Soul Urge and Personality numbers above. A separate, older tradition — Chaldean numerology, associated with ancient Babylon — assigns different values to letters based on sound rather than sequence and is still used by some practitioners today, which is why you'll occasionally see a name "add up" differently on other sites. The Pythagorean system used by this calculator is the most common in modern Western numerology because it's straightforward and consistent.
Reading your numbers together, not separately
A common misconception is treating each of the five numbers as a standalone horoscope. In practice they're meant to be read as a set: your Life Path is the road, your Expression is the vehicle you're best suited to drive, and your Soul Urge is why you actually want to make the trip. Tension between numbers is normal and often the most useful part of a reading — a Life Path 8 (built for ambition and material achievement) paired with a Soul Urge 9 (pulled toward giving and service) doesn't cancel out, it describes someone whose drive to build something is really in service of a bigger cause. If your numbers seem to contradict each other, that contradiction is usually the most honest description of you.
One more note worth knowing: seeing a master number (11, 22 or 33) among your results isn't automatically "better" than a single-digit number. It simply means more intensity and more responsibility attached to that number's theme — many people experience their first master number less as a gift and more as pressure, until they grow into the scale of what it's asking of them. There's no rush to live up to it; master numbers tend to reveal their full meaning over a lifetime, not a weekend.
Frequently asked questions
What do I need to use the numerology calculator?
Just your full birth name (as given on your birth certificate) and your date of birth — the tool uses both to calculate your five core numbers.
Why does my Expression number use my full birth name and not my current name?
Numerology traditionally reads your birth name because it's believed to hold the original vibrational blueprint you were born with, so using it rather than a married or shortened name gives the intended result.
What's the difference between my Life Path and Expression numbers?
Your Life Path number, from your birth date, describes your life's direction and lessons, while your Expression number, from your full name, describes your natural talents and what you're here to build.
